appeared to be composed of natives of the Swatow district. One assistant was permanently stationed at Hoihow the port

for the Island of Hainan.

Nature of the business. Opium was bought in Hoihow or Pak- hoi; sometimes on the firm's om account sometimes on the

account of various friends of the firm, who sold it on

commission. Some was sent by an employee of the firm, but

he soon get into prison in Heihow, and thereafter the opium

me mostly obtained through a commission agent in Hoihow and Pakhoi, both of whom were only acting for others. The

basis of the whole business was the exchange of arms and

ammunition for epium. Mauser pistols and revolvers were

purchased from various smugglers in Hongkong with ammunition to fit and forwarded to Hoihow for sale. All the proceeds

were used to buy opium. Very little money was actually

remitted either my, there appears to have been difficulty

in remitting money between the two places owing to the

disturbed state of the country. The trade in arms seems to

have bem very remaneretive, the guns fetched 8150 to $270

each, and the ammonition made equally good prices. The firm

seems to have in the opium trade about one year, in that time they imported roughly 120,000 taels of raw opium from the places mentioned; this opium was retailed here in quantities from 2 taels upwards, mostly in quantities of betwem Bộ and 100 taels. Occasionally a large consignment was forwarded to fatow, where the firm seem to have been on very good terms with an official bureau called The Opium Suppression Head Bureau. This bureau seems to be another name for the Swatow Opium Farm, who sometimes bought the opium forwarded outright, sometimes sold it on a commission basis. The largest amount imported in any one consignment was 4200 taels. Most of the consignments were much smaller. The business was very active up about June, when the old crop was practically exhausted, and the price at Hoihow had risen greatly while quality had so greatly deteriorated that
